Start the New Year off with Writing Success

Several years ago I created my writing book with words and pictures.  I created it in Boardmaker, and could not figure out how to make all the pages into one document.  After some research on the internet, I'm so excited to say I finally have it.  I then saved it as a PDF so that all my educator friends could also have a copy for their classroom.  I've used this for years in kindergarten, but it would work great for any of the elementary grades.  I hope you enjoy!!

Thanks McDonalds we loved our treat!

Smith Elementary had a McTeacher night at our McDonalds.  I had a blast working behind the counter and living out memories ( I worked at McDonalds for 6 years.) We raised a lot of money for our school, and our classroom was chosen to get the hamburger party.  We loved it!  Thanks McDonalds!!!!

Let's do a little Christmas writing

A Christmas tree map

I will glue the above map on a chart and I will guide the students to complete the things that a Christmas tree is and the things a Christmas tree has.  If it was later in the year.  I would have my students complete a student map along with the class map.

The students will write from the Christmas tree map.  They will trace the sentences and pick words from the organizer to complete the sentences.  They will then illustrate their writing using lots of detains.  If was later in the year.  The students would write directly from the tree map with out a tracing prompt.

Oh Christmas books, Oh Christmas books.......

Over the last few weeks we have been reading lots of Christmas stories.  I have have two baskets of Christmas books and have an itch to add more.  You never can have too many.
Michael Garland is one of my favorite authors for Christmas books. His pictures are breathtaking.  Last week we read A Mouse Before Christmas.  This week we will be reading An Elf For Christmas and Christmas Magic.
I can't leave out the most important book for this week that we will be reading.... The Polar Express.  We look forward to having our k-crew pajama day, reading the book, watching the movie, and sometimes.....a special gift arrives.  Excited to see if it happens this year.  :-)

The Polar Express and Christmas Learning Fun

Have students cut the squares apart, and then glue them on a sentence strip.  Another idea would be to cut the squares apart, glue them down on a piece of paper, and have the students illustrate the sentence.

Have students cut the pieces of the train out and glue them on a sentence strip in order.

These cards can be used in so many ways.....to read numbers words, count sets...... Place the cards in order using the numbers words one-ten.

WE LOVE GINGERBREAD STORIES!

One of my favorite things to do in the month of December is reads lots of gingerbread stories.  The kids love them, and it's so much fun to see how the stories are the same and different.  They are great stories to use to talk the story elements of the story...... characters, setting, problem/solution, events, beginning, middle and end.  Here is the thinking map we have been completing together about each story we read.
